crook, you

crook, you
American slang for a criminal since the 1870s, and used in Britain with a similar meaning since the 1890s, but not frequent as a vocative. ‘You dirty crook’ occurs in Daughters of Mulberry, by Roger Longrigg, used by a woman to a man she is accusing of criminal behaviour. Moviola, by Garson Kanin, has: ‘“I’m going to ruin you if it costs me a million dollars.” “So what?” said Gilbert. “Tou’ll no doubt charge it to the company, you cheap crook.”’ ‘Buncha crooks!’ is addressed to a room full of people in Jug of Silver, a short story by Truman Capote.
